Access

Easy access with pram or stroller-

Consider the width of the entry point (880mm is standard width for wheelchairs) and the width of aisles.
How does the entry door open?
Does it open both ways?
Do I have displays/ fixtures that interfere with access?

Large steps or several steps are best converted to a ramp.

Special parking areas, “Parents with Prams”

Most feasible for shopping centres and larger stores, however many councils are designating parent parking in their public parking spaces, contact your council and encourage them to do the same.

Parent Parking needs to be larger than a regular parking space (again similar to wheelchair access size).  It should also be either curbside or nearest to the safest place to cross the road.

Parent Parking is great to consider for open spaces such as parks, swimming pools and beaches too, encourage your council, we’re happy to talk to them on your behalf!

Attitude

Making everyone welcome

*Encourage staff to acknowledge and greet children.

Consider a play area, it doesn’t need to be elaborate, a small table with paper and fat crayons is perfect and doesn’t take a lot of room.

Give aways like stickers or coloring pictures are a great, inexpensive resource. They can feature your business and be hung instore!

We don’t recommend unfilled balloons or anything that fits into a camera film canister as they can be choking hazards.

Facilities

Nursing

Nursing babies, by breast or bottle is a loving, natural and necessary act.  You may wish to provide a clean, private and comfortable place for parents to nurse and these are fantastic.  *Remember though, that parents should feel comfortable to nurse babies in public.  Let your staff know that nursing parents are welcome and suggest some answers to any queries other customers may have

Toilets

*If you don’t have toilets on site, ensure that your staff know where the nearest public toilet is located and the quickest way to get there.

If you do have toilets, is there a change table in the lady’s and men’s toilets?
Can small children reach the sink or is there a safe foot stool?
Can they reach the soap?
See in the mirror?

Safety

General Safety

Common sense is the best indicator when it comes to safe places for children.  It’s important to note that in this instance we refer to safety in respect to preventable accidents and injury.  When it comes to physical safety, we fully endorse the Safety House Program and would encourage Family Friendly members to become Safety Houses by visiting www.safetyhouse.org.au

 Criteria

*Play area (if available) contains clean, safe toys and books.
*Outdoor venues need to consider such hazards as water, traffic and ground surface.

*Public access and staff work areas are clearly defined and preferably separated by barrier.
*Hot surfaces are clearly labeled.

 Industry Extras

Restaurant & Catering

*Include healthy options such as grilled chicken, fish or a stir fry and present them with colorful, vibrant fresh veggies. Kids love colour!
*Take care when serving hot foods.
*Provide appropriate seating including high chairs and booster seats.

Tourism/Accommodation

Consider a playground if room permits or provide in room entertainment such as colouring.
Provide extra towels beside the pool, children often forget a towel!
Remember to stock plenty of brochures about family activities, events and locations.
*Know what facilities are in your area, how far away they are and how to get there.

Events

Provide lots of toilets, there’s no such thing as too many!
Remember change tables and no-smell bins.
Create shaded and sheltered areas. Provide inexpensive food and drink options, especially
water.
